Senior Cheer & Pen Pals

Let’s UNITE to send our Hancock County seniors some cheer!

United Way of Hancock County is rolling out two new programs - Senior Cheer and Senior Pen Pals – to give hundreds of seniors living in Hancock County care facilities an extra boost during this necessary time of isolation. Because of the virus, family and friends are very limited in their ability to visit with their loved ones. Let’s bring in reinforcements and show them all we care!

If you would like to participate in Senor Cheer or Senior Pen Pals, please contact Sarah Mayle at sarah.mayle@uwhancock.org

UWHC's Senior Cheer

Some seniors may not be able to write back to a pen pal, but they would love an uplifting card, note, or piece of art - a great opportunity to spread cheer for whole classrooms or groups, individuals too.

Sign up with Sarah Mayle, volunteer coordinator at UWHC at sarah.mayle@uwhancock.org or (419) 423-1432. Classes or groups will be scheduled on a calendar to ensure seniors at all locations in need of a boost can receive it for as long as we can keep it coming!

Cards, notes and art can be placed in the drop box in the lobby between 8:30am-4pm at United Way of Hancock County, 245 Stanford Pkwy., Findlay.

Please Mark on Packages/Envelopes:

- Your group name, or class and school.

- Type of cheer (cards, letters, art).

Number of “cheer items”.

Volunteers will deliver Senior Cheer once a week. I will let you know where it goes!

**Small Gifts - If you would like to include a small gift as part of Senior Cheer or Senior Pen Pals, care facilitators suggest: Stationary and postage for letter writing; lip balm, sweet treats (no nuts, no homemade), large print word search, large print books, or large print crossword puzzles. (Thank you!)

UWHC's Senior Pen Pals

Some seniors are interested in the connection of letter exchange through Senior Pen Pals, a wonderful opportunity for the dedicated individual of any age to brighten someone’s day.

(Also provides today’s students with the chance to try out a fading pastime – the anticipation of fun mail, intricacies of letter writing and how to address an envelope!)

Volunteers can select a male or female pen pal to send a card or letter of cheer. In your message, include your name and return address for your pen pal to write back. If you are a student, include your name and school address. Your pen pal can send mail to the school’s address “care of” you.

Sign up with Sarah Mayle, volunteer coordinator at UWHC at sarah.mayle@uwhancock.org or 419-423-1432. To ensure all seniors interested are matched with a pen pal, place your first letter in the drop box in the front lobby at United Way of Hancock County between 8:30am-4pm, 245 Stanford Pkwy., Findlay.

Please mark on package/envelope:

- Your name and return address in the top left.

- Write “Senior Pen Pals” on the front of the envelope.

- Volunteers will deliver letters to nursing homes once a week!

*Please note – While we are putting together the opportunity for seniors to connect through Senior Pen Pals, we cannot guarantee all will write back. Please know that your kind efforts are greatly appreciated regardless of response. Kind words and thoughtful gestures make a world of difference.
