United Way of Hancock County Hosting Breakfast Kickoff

Gene Stevens, this year’s chair for United Way of Hancock County’s annual fundraising campaign, will host a breakfast kickoff event on Friday, September 6th from 7-10 a.m. in Great Scot’s parking lot at 2021 Broad Ave.

The event is free and open to the public. It will include breakfast, keynote speakers, displays by partner agencies and a live radio remote with WKXA.  The purpose is to inspire campaign volunteers and local citizens to support United Way as well as distribute campaign materials. A professional videographer will be on hand to take video of attendees in a ball pit discussing how they “live united.”  Music will be provided by Time Warp DJ Services.

Carol Steegman, Feed a Child coordinator and Bridges Out of Poverty graduate and trainer, will speak about her experience in poverty and how she brought her family out of the challenges of being on government assistance.

Steegman is a single mother of three daughters; Jamie 24, Mackenzie, 18, and Loryn, 6. She also has a three-year-old granddaughter, Baylee Marie.  She began working at the YMCA after completing the Getting Ahead class through Bridges Out of Poverty, a United Way funded program. In March, 2013 she was hired as the Feed a Child coordinator at the YMCA. Feed a Child is a weekend food program for children who qualify for free or reduced cost lunch and is a Halt Hunger Initiative program, which United Way of Hancock County started in 2011. Steegman is involved in the community as a Certified Bridges Out of Poverty trainer, and a leadership coalition member for the organization. She also serves on the Getting Ahead advisory board, and is a Hancock Saves board member. Steegman will speak about her experiences going through the Bridges Out of Poverty program and her successful rise from poverty as well as the importance of the Feed A Child program.

The schedule for the event is as follows: 7 a.m. social gathering, 7:30 buffet breakfast, 8:15 presentations from Gene Stevens, campaign chair, and Steegman, 9:00 ribbon cutting with Chamber Ambassadors and material distribution. 9:15-10 t-shirt distribution, video filming and social time.

The event is free but RSVP is required. Register online at, email or call 419-423-1432.
